Exploration, exploitation of ocean floors and their biodiversity

Access to Web sites dedicated to that topic

The objective is to explore, with the most powerful tools, ocean floors more or less well known in order to understand geophysical, geochemical and biological processes and their interactions. This work must contribute to a better control of exploitation activities or the use of living, mineral and energy resources, and contribute to preserve unique ecosystems and of major interest facing human action.

This topic is organized in three programs:

  • Fluid, mineral, ecosystems interactions in extreme environments

The objective of this program is to develop multi-field projects allowing the study of major ecosystems of margins (Gulf of Guinea, Mediterranean sea ...) and of ridges (the Azores, the northern Pacific ...).

  • Mineral and energy resources, sedimentary processes and impact on ecosystems

The objective of this program aims to identify sedimentary processes, the structure of stackings and their stability. It also aims to characterize mineral and energy resources and the development of technologies in relation with industry (offshore oil...). It will integrate other problems of society such as geological risks and renewable energies at sea.

  • Valorization of biological resources

The objective of this program is to enrich the Ifremer bacteria lab (bacteria resulting from sea-beds) and to develop prior industrial applications of the use of marine molecules.
