This so-called eutrophication phenomenon alters the usual structure of ecosystem and can lead to massive kills caused by anoxia in some extreme cases, when almost all the dissolved oxygen in bottom waters has been consumed by organic matter decomposition. Just behind the semi-enclosed lagoons, the most sensible areas are the dilution plumes of main rivers. In the case of French coasts, mediterranean lagoons have been eutrophicated for a long time, whereas the coastal areas of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel have been partially preserved by the strong tidal dispersion ; during the last two decades however, more and more spots of strong eutrophication did appear, caused by phytoplankton blooms (Bay of Seine, Bay of Vilaine and south Brittany) or Ulva mass blooms on beaches (several embayments on northern and western coasts of Brittany). Some questions arise:
1/ Which effects are to be expected from still increasing nitrogen loadings from agricultural sources ?
2/ To which level is it necessary to bring back these loadings if actions are impulsed to recover a good environmental quality in the eutrophicated sites ?
Only mathematical models are able to handle simultaneously the dynamics of all the main processes leading to eutrophication in the coastal zone : horizontal and vertical mixing by currents, erosion-deposition of particles, nutrient uptake by growing algae, remineralization of detrital organique matter...Picked up from recent studies done by the "Coastal Ecology" department at IFREMER/Brest, 3 different case studies are presented, in order to illustrate how ecological models can help understanding the shift in ecosystem structure, as well as building efficient scenarios for eutrophication control:
a/ the Bay of Lannion (western English Channel), which is an open embayment with strong tidal oscillation, but which is invaded every spring and summer by large Ulva accumulations ; public authorities have launched a recovery program, based on quantitative targets for loadings, computing by models.
b/ the eastern Bay of Seine (eastern English Channel), which is strongly enriched by loadings from the Seine river and exhibits frequent dinoflagellate blooms during summer, including some toxic species (Dinophysis sp.)
c/ the Bay of Brest, which can be considered as a naturally well-protected site, thanks to its strong tidal regime, but which is suspected to exhibit a slow increase of the summer dinoflagellate-dominated blooms due to constant lowering of Si/N ratios of marine waters in late spring and summer.

A positive correlation between atrazine concentration and aneuploidy in C. gigas was observed. Moreover, the impact of atrazine on aneuploidy level persisted in time both within and between generations, demonstrating the influence of an environmental pollution on this phenomenon. On the other hand, the aneuploidy level of C. gigas was not influenced at the cadmium concentrations tested. Significant differences in aneuploidy levels were observed in oysters originating from the same families on different sites, and in wild oysters collected over time, suggesting that both site and season affect aneuploidy. After a short description of their main characteristics, it is shown how a common grid of analysis has been settled and applied to the five case studies, with a focus on the definition and valuation of meaningful integrated coastal management (ICM) process indicators. The results lead to a clear identification of the strengths and weaknesses of available planning tools and their necessary adaptation to future ICM strategies at the local and national levels, in the framework of the recent European recommendation on ICZM. From the active application of such indicators, it is proposed to develop a "Good Practice Guide" which would be beneficial to ICM initiatives on the French coast and elsewhere. The Bay of Seine receives the Seine river, which exhibits very high nutrient concentrations, and this coastal zone constitutes a typical case of eutrophication in a river plume area. In terms of analyses, sequential extraction and analysis of sedimentary phosphorus were used in order, to measure various forms of particulate phosphorus in suspended matter and sediment (calcium-bound phosphate, Fe/Al-bound phosphate, exchangeable phosphate and organic phosphorus). In the modelling approach, the Bay is divided into 42 boxes and a two-layer, vertical thermohaline model is linked with the horizontal circulation scheme to take vertical stratification into account. The previous biological sub-model, with only nitrogen and silicon as nutrients, was improved by taking account of (a) various forms of bioavailable phosphorus (dissolved phosphate, exchangeable phosphate and organic phosphorus) and (b) experimental parameters, which govern the adsorption/desorption of phosphate at the solid-water interface. The ecological model accurately reproduces dissolved nutrient behaviour in the river plume, and concentrations of diatoms, flagellates and zooplankton are consistent with observed values. Simulated exchangeable phosphate and organic phosphorus in suspended matter are in the range of measured concentrations, whereas these particulate variables are simulated with less accuracy in the sediment. After evaluating the respective roles of nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon as limiting factors for phytoplanktonic growth, the model was used to estimate consequences of reduced phosphorus or nitrogen input for phytoplanktonic production in the Bay of Seine. Moreover, cytoplasmic extract as well as live V, pectenicida cells provoked, within a few hours, death of P. maximus hemocytes adhering to a glass slide. After partial purification, it was shown that toxic activities of V. pectenicida cytoplasmic extract was due to a toxin, named VHKT (for vibrio hemocyte-killer toxin), which is heat stable, acid and protease resistant, and less than 3 kDa in molecular weight. Particles are collected and isolated in a rectangular box where they are highly illuminated by a white light plane. The total field of view is determined. The camera, equipped with a remote controlled zoom, can resolve particles sizes ranging from 25 mum to several millimetres. Real-time image analyses are therefore performed. Particle counts and size spectra are calculated and displayed. Total light intensity scattered by the illuminated particles is closely related to the back-scattering values determined by an optical back-scatter sensor. A particle size analyser using diffraction analysis is associated to this video-system on a custom profiler. Hydrological parameters are measured by a standard CTD probe associated to a chlorophyll sensor. Results are acquired and graphically presented in real time. This custom profiler presents numerous advantages in oceanographic research. Two examples of its use in different coastal areas are presented. In an estuary, temporal evolution of particle characteristics was described in relation to the tide cycle. While the video-system allows direct visualization and characterization of the largest particles, the particle-size analyser performs precise quantification of the finest ones. it was shown that the two methods were in accordance for quantification of large aggregates, which were observed around slack tide when salinity decreased. Video analyses cannot be performed above 25 mg l(-1) dry weight equivalent. The system reliability, resolution and limits were also demonstrated during a cruise in the Gulf of Finland. A typical profile is presented here showing different layers, one characterized by the association of heterotrophic flagellates and detritals, and another dominated by zooplankton, the surface layer being characterized by cyanobacterial colonies. Video associated to diffraction analyses allows the study of flocculation processes in estuaries and a detailed description of thin layers. Both estimate the total volume of particles. After comparison with dry weight of suspended matter sampled in the study area, the different measurements were converted into dry weight. In three different kinetic energy regimes, times series were coherent for most of the observations. Discrepancies of suspended sediment concentrations estimated by both sensors appeared under specific hydrodynamic conditions: they were related to occurrences of definite particle populations. Overestimations and underestimations of measurements by the instruments depend on the optical principles of the sensors (backscatter and diffraction). Flocs appearing at low tide with low currents are detected by the PSA and not detected by the OBS which is more sensitive to finer particles and re-suspension of sedimentary particles from the bed, induced by high current velocities during flood tide.

The FSS consists of a linear array of 15 sampling bottles, set horizontally at 20 cm intervals. Data acquired from the CTD and fluorescence probe of the FSS enable it to be precisely positioned at the depth of the highest density gradient or at the chlorophyll a maximum. The FSS made it possible to investigate fine scale vertical distribution of phytoplankton and relationships with water density, nutrient concentrations or light availability, for spring and summer conditions. Under spring conditions, the entire upper layer exhibited a dominant diatom population (Chaetoceros sociale, Thalassiosira rotula) above 15 m with evident uptake in dissolved inorganic nutrients and the maximum concentration of dinoflagellates (mainly small forms of Gymnodinium spp. and Gyrodinium spp.) was located 16 m deep, where light energy began to be a limiting factor for phytoplankton growth. During summer conditions, the maximum phytoplankton biomass (10 μg l−1 of chlorophyll a) was only concentrated in the 2 m thick pycnocline layer, located at a depth of 12 m. The diatom C. sociale was dominant in the phytoplankton peak. Dinoflagellates (Dinophysis acuminata and Gymnodinium spp.) were also concentrated around the density gradient. Low inorganic nitrogen concentration (<0.2 μmol l−1) was responsible for the limitation of phytoplankton production in the surface layer above the pycnocline, and the phytoplankton growth was irradiance-limited underneath the pycnocline.Elsevier2005-10textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2005/publication-533.pdfDOI:10.1016/j.ecss.2005.06.001https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/533/Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science (0272-7714) (Elsevier), 2005-10 , Vol. 65 , N. 1-2 , P. 94-108eng2005 Elsevier Ltd All rights reservedinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

Fluorescence at the outlet of each experimental unit was measured continuously, and biodeposits were recovered twice daily to evaluate feeding time activity (FTA) and rates of organic filtration (OFR), ingestion (OIR) and organic absorption (OAR). Ion-pairing high performance liquid chromatography (IP-HPLC) was performed concurrently to quantify paralytic phycotoxins both (i) individually in shellfish at the end of the contamination period and (ii) in A. minutum cultures to estimate cellular toxin concentration. These data allowed comparison of the actual tissue toxin concentration (TOX) with the theoretical toxin accumulation rate (TAR) calculated from the linear relations between OAR, cell number, fluorescence and cell toxicity. The results show high FTA/TAR and FTA/TOX correlations (R-2 = 0.78) for both oysters and scallops. The TAR/FOX relation, though not yet clearly defined, suggests the minimum quantity of absorbed toxin at which the accumulation process is induced. It is cultivated mainly on Ouessant island as a raw material for the industrial production of a cellular extract, which demonstrate antibacterial and antifungal activities. The structure of the water-soluble cell-wall polysaccharides from this seaweed was realized with the aim of developing the byproduct of manufacture of this extract, rich in cellular walls. Structural elucidation was achieved by the combination of two stratégies.
First, a study was performed on the crude polysaccharides extract of this seaweed. It required the development of specific analytical techniques and showed that these polysaccharides were mainly composed of galactose, belonging mainly to the D-series, as well as of xylose and sulfate ester substituents. The methylation analysis applied to these polysaccharides revealed a linear backbone built up of alternating 3-linked-beta-Dgalactopyranosyl and 4-linked-alpha-D/L-galactopyranosyl residues. This step also showed that various hydroxyl groups might also carry substituents such as sulfate ester or sugar sidechains. Because of the complicated structural feature of these polysaccharides, numerous uncertainties were pointed out and could not be resolved. Therefore, purification analyses were applied to these crude polysaccharides extract.
Depolymerization of the polysaccharide using a radical process produced a low molecular weight fraction, where the sulphur content and the main structural features were the same as the native polysaccharide. This step did not allow the resolution of the ambiguities raised previously. The second method of purification, based on the heterogeneous sulfate substitution pattern on these polysaccharides previously separated by their molecular weight, allowed us to define the structure. First, the exact sulfate substitution pattern was determine by a specific methylation analysis. Then, NMR spectroscopy was used to show the presence of 4-linked residues belonging to the both D- and L-series. This demonstrated that these polysaccharides are complex hybrid galactans containing both an agar and a carrageenan-like structure. In addition, presence of substituents, which are pyruvate groups or methyl groups was also proven through this technique. The branched structure of these polysaccharides was also confirmed by the presence of side-chains sugar, such as xylose or galactose, which carry sulfate ester groups.
In this study, cell-wall polysaccharides from the red seaweed Asparagopsis armata were identified as complex DL-galactan hybrids with mixed carrageenan (belonging on one hand to the xi- and pi-family, and on the other hand to the gamma- and psi-family sulfated in an heterogeneous way), and agar backbone structure. The potential applications for the native and the low molecular weight fraction were also estimated in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields.L'algue rouge Asparagopsis armata (Bonnemaisoniales) est cultivée au large de l'île d'Ouessant (Finistère) dans le but d'en commercialiser un extrait cellulaire aux propriétés antibactériennes et antifongiques.

The growth rate of the juvenile sea urchins in this intertidal zone was low compared with more sheltered populations. A sharp increase in the gonad index was observed between January and March at the beginning of a period of algal production, and was concomitant with increases in seawater temperature and food consumption rate. This gonad index increase was followed by a single spawning period occurring between March and June, probably triggered by the phytoplankton bloom induced by upwelling conditions. Larval development in all three populations was severely inhibited and could be explained, in part, by high and generalized Cu contamination throughout the region. Specific contamination of particular populations by Pb or Hg was attributed to local industries and the incomplete dispersion of pollutants in spite of the high hydrodynamics along the Moroccan Atlantic coast. One of the three populations studied showed strong indications of abnormal development; the degradation of its condition appeared to be due to the presence of a wadi (temporary river) which can seasonally reduce the salinity, directly affecting the sea urchin physiology and indirectly enhancing the metal toxicity.Cambridge University Press2005-08textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2005/publication-602.pdfDOI:10.1017/S0025315405012026https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/602/Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (0025-3154) (Cambridge University Press), 2005-08 , Vol. 85 , N. 4 , P. 999-1007engCambridge University Press 2005info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

Our results, in accordance with previous studies, demonstrate that there are episodic declines in the growth rate. Concurrent events of low growth rate and large bottom-concentrations of algae following diatom blooms (Cerataulina pelagica or Rhizosolenia delicatula), suggests that this high concentration of phytoplankton on the bottom layer may affect food intake or respiratory activity of the scallops by gill clogging or oxygen depletion. In this study, silicic acid or phosphorus are inferred to be limiting factors responsible for the collapse of the spring bloom. Further, we suggest that, in an N-enriched ecosystem, Si or P-limitation and the changing sinking velocities of phytoplankton, could affect the biology of benthic suspension-feeders.Cambridge University Press2000-08textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2000/publication-612.pdfDOI:10.1017/S0025315400002526https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/612/Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (0025-3154) (Cambridge University Press), 2000-08 , Vol. 80 , N. 4 , P. 667-673eng2000 Cambridge University Pressinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

Seasonal delta(18)O profiles, obtained by drilling the daily calcite ridges deposited at the surface of the left valve, were compared with in situ measurements of temperature and salinity. We show that P. maximus delta(18)O values accurately track seasonal variations in bottom water temperature. Shell growth rate has no significant effect on shell delta(18)O values. Our study demonstrates that daily variations in water temperature can be reconstructed within about 0.5 degrees C. Temperatures estimated with the paleotemperature equation established in this study were compared with temperatures derived from previously published equations. The comparison indicates that the most commonly used paleotemperature equation for biogenic calcite (Epstein et al., 1953) provides inaccurate temperature estimates, but the Kim and O'Neil (1997) equation, established from abiogenic calcite precipitation, provides results very similar to ours and should therefore be used for scallop individuals coming from populations where proper empirical calibration cannot be done. Pecten maximus bivalves precipitate calcite in isotopic equilibrium with seawater, produce large daily growth striae, are stenohaline, and are well preserved in archeological and geological deposits, making them an excellent high-frequency archive of paleoenvironmental change.AGU2005-10textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2005/publication-643.pdfDOI:10.1029/2004GC000890https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/643/Geochemistry, Geophysics, and Geosystems (1525-2027) (AGU), 2005-10 , Vol. 6 , P. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the role of P on planktonic production in the waters influenced by the Gironde discharges; the Gironde being one of the two largest rivers on the French Atlantic coast. The survey is based on several cruises made in 1998 and 1999. Two different patterns were observed for waters with salinity below and above 34.5. For waters with salinity <34.5. P was found to be the first limiting nutrient of winter and spring phytoplankton blooms, based on undetectable phosphate (<20 nM), high NO3 : PO4 ratios, typically >100:1, short phosphate turnover time (1 to 2 h), high alkaline phosphatase activities (mean of 176 nM h(-1) in late May 1999) and ultimately great increases of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and primary production in phosphate-enriched samples relative to controls. This limitation could be partly explained by the Gironde nutrient supplies, which were phosphate deficient compared with the mineral nitrogen (N-min : PO4 was >40 within a salinity range 16-33). In summer, corresponding to the period of low influence of Gironde supplies (low runoff and a spreading effect of the plume), phytoplankton growth would be controlled by both P and nitrogen (N), according to low nitrate and the major effect of combined P+N (NH4) enrichment on Chl a and primary production compared with the addition of Nor P singly. In early October, after the first autumn gales, the mixed layer was enriched with a sufficient supply of nutrients to support exponential phytoplankton growth for 4 days in enclosures. The pattern was different for waters at the limit of the Gironde plume and Atlantic oceanic waters (within salinity range 34.5-35.4). P would not be the single limiting nutrient of winter blooms and spring phytoplankton growth since low phosphate, and also low nitrate and silicate, availability were recorded and phosphate addition alone had no effect on phytoplankton biomass and production in bioassays. The early P limitation of winter blooms had consequences for the phytoplankton community structure in the Gironde plume waters (salinity < 34.5). Whereas major cells of these blooms were greater than 20 pm in size, phytoplankton growth in spring and autumn was dominated by 3-20 μm (e.g. 53% of Chl a in late April 1999) and < 3 mum cells (e.g. 29% of Chl a). The decreasing size of phytoplankton cells is emphasized by the severe competition between bacteria and algae for phosphate, since bacteria dominated phosphate uptake in spring (e.g. 87% in late April, 77% in late May). Bacteria tended to have greater affinity for phosphate and seemed also to be P limited at certain times in spring, according to results from phosphate enrichment bioassays in late May 1999. The alternative method for phytoplankton to obtain P would be the use of the dissolved organic phosphorus pool by alkaline phosphatase activity. According to the movement of P-33 after initial labelling of microbial populations and a subsequent cold chase, the major transfer of P occurred from the bacterial to the dissolved fraction. We hypothesize that algae obtain part of its dissolved organic phosphorus from bacteria-originated organic phosphorus compounds.Oxford university press2002-02textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2002/publication-690.pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/690/Journal of plankton research (0142-7873) (Oxford university press), 2002-02 , Vol. 24 , N. 2 , P. 97-117engOxford University Press 2002info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

The objective of this study is to confirm the existence of winter phytoplankton blooms, responsible for the early exhaustion of phosphate, within the Gironde plume waters (southeast Bay of Biscay), and to understand what may initiate them so early. Two cruises, BIOMET 2 and BIOMET 3, were carried out respectively in early (8 to 21 January) and late winter 1998 (25 February to 11 March). An increase of phytoplankton biomass (chl a) between the 2 cruises and non-conservative nutrients observed in late winter confirm an early phytoplankton growth both in the Gironde plume and adjacent oceanic waters. Among factors that possibly initiate these blooms, light availability seems to be the best candidate. First, the status of available Light for phytoplankton changed dramatically between the 2 cruises when comparing the instantaneous depth-averaged irradiance (E-m) received by phytoplankton with the light saturation parameter E-k determined from P versus E curves. Light was limiting for phytoplankton growth in early winter according to systematically lower values of E-m than E-k in the daytime. However, light was not limiting during a large part of the day in late winter since E-m was above E-k during 40% of the daylight. The estimated critical depth from the Nelson and Smith (1991; Limnol Oceanogr 36:1650-1661) reformulation of the Sverdrup (1953; J Cons Perm Int Explor Mer 18:287-295) equation was much shallower (4 to 13 m) than the mixed layer depth (15 to 50 m) in early winter in the whole Gironde plume up to oceanic waters. On the contrary, it was much deeper (35 m) than the mixed layer depth (9 m) in late winter for the intermediate plume (salinity range 33 to 35) and similar for oceanic waters (S > 35.5) with a bottom depth of 60 to 70 m. Therefore, according to the Sverdrup model, available light is the triggering factor of winter phytoplankton blooms in the Gironde plume and adjacent oceanic waters. Moreover, Riley's (1957; Limnol Oceanogr 2:252-270) empirical critical irradiance of 20.9 W m(-2) could be applied in these waters to predict the onset of blooms since it was reached in late winter but not in early winter. The establishment of halostratification and/or decrease of the light vertical attenuation coefficient prevail in the initiation process of winter phytoplankton blooms.Inter-Research2001-03textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2001/publication-810.pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/810/Marine Ecology Progress Series (0171-8630) (Inter-Research), 2001-03 , Vol. 212 , P. 117-130engInter-Research 2001info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

The pelagic ecosystem is described precisely, on the one hand with the help of three phytoplanktonic compartments, and the other by considering the microbial food web. Primary production appears to be mainly controlled by stratification and turbidity, except in the Bay of Seine where high terrestrial nutrient inputs generate a sharp enrichment. Moreover, the model allows some general ecological conclusions to be drawn. From the simulation, it appears that inorganic nitrogen in the water column is mainly produced by an intense recycling. In accordance with in situ measurements, these results tend to demonstrate the predominance of the regenerated production over the new one in the English Channel. Simulation of nitrogen fluxes on an annual basis underlines the importance of bacterial remineralization, underestimating microzooplanktonic excretion in the recycling of elements. Furthermore, exchanges between pelagic and benthic compartments appear to be weak.

Firstly, the River Seine's nutrient fluxes were established: 80 000-130 000 t a(-1) of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, 6 400-8 400 t a(-1) of dissolved phosphorus and 20 000-77 000 t a(-1) of dissolved silicium. Estuarine processes were taken into account. Consequences of nutrient loading for the bay were then evaluated at the pelagic level (nutrient and chlorophyll enrichments) and the benthic level (distribution of various phosphorus fractions in superficial sediments). The large continental inputs always induce concentration gradients in the water from the mouth of the river to the northwest of the bay. The northward spreading of fine particulate matter controls the distribution of adsorbed phosphate and iron-aluminium bound phosphate in sediments. In contrast, calcium bound phosphate, the main fraction in sediments, is not affected by river inputs. Organic phosphorus in sediments is related to phytoplankton blooms, with increasing concentrations during productive periods; afterwards the fast recycling prevents sedimentary accumulation. The nutrient depletions observed beyond the turbid plume during spring 1992 enabled the calculation of nutrient uptake rates, and the comparison of these rates with phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a + phaeopigments). Ratios of nutrient consumption to pigment concentration were estimated at 1 mu mol mu g(-1) for nitrogen, 0.05 for phosphorus and 0.5 for silicate. These values, as N/P and Si/N uptake ratios (respectively 17.5 and 0.4), were similar to usual values. Elsevier1998-11textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/1998/publication-844.pdfDOI:10.1016/S0399-1784(99)80016-4https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/844/Oceanologica Acta (0399-1784) (Elsevier), 1998-11 , Vol. 21 , N. 6 , P. 923-935fre1998 Published by Elsevier SASinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

Development through selective breeding of oyster stocks which are better suited for aquaculture purposes, is likely to reverse this tendency since only hatcheries will be able to supply such animals. Scallop farming, which at present is poorly developed in France, relies exclusively on hatchery produced spat. Although hatchery technology is constantly being improved, significant production problems remain which must be solved before hatcheries become a major supplier of juveniles for the industry. This paper describes the present state of hatchery technology in France based on experimental results obtained with the great scallop Pecten maximus and the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, over the past ten years. Compared to the great scallop, the Pacific oyster has higher D larva yields (60% for C. gigas vs. 30% for P. maximus) and a faster larval growth rate (10 mu m.d(-1) for C. gigas vs. 5 mu m.d(-1) for P. maximus). However, Pacific oysters have a greater heterogeneity during larval development and higher mortality rates (40% far C. gigas vs. 25% for P. maximus) which produce lower overall yields of pediveliger larvae ready-to-set for Pacific oysters (15%) compared to the great scallop (30%). Development of continuous larval and post-larval culture methods along with development of continuous phytoplankton technology offers one of the most promising methods to improve molluscan hatchery techniques. croissance du naissain obtenu en écloserie, depuis la taille initiale de 6.45 ± 0.75 mm jusqu'à 15 mois. If field measurements provide accurate values on the vertical dimension, ocean colour data offer frequent observations of surface biological patterns at various scales of major importance for the validation of ecosystem modelling. Although the hydrobiological model of the continental margin reproduces the main seasonal variability of surface biomass, the optical remote sensing data have helped to identify low grid resolution, input inaccuracies and neglect of swell-induced erosion mechanism as model limitations in shallow waters. Airborne remote sensing is used to show that satellite data and field measurements are unsuitable for comparison in the extreme case of phytoplankton blooms in patches of a few hundred metres. Vertically, the satellite observation is consistent with near surface in situ measurements as the sub-surface chlorophyll maximum usually encountered in summer is not detected by optical remote sensing. A mean error (60C) of 50.5% of the chlorophyll-a estimate in turbid waters using the SeaWiFS-OC5 algorithm allows the quantitative use of ocean colour data by the coastal oceanographic community.Taylor & Francis2005-10textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2005/publication-953.pdfDOI:10.1080/01431160500227847https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/953/International Journal of Remote Sensing (0143-1161) (Taylor & Francis), 2005-10 , Vol. 26 , N. 20 , P. 4421-4444eng2005 Taylor & Francisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

Using these facilities, the bacterial colonization of three substrata (stainless steel UB6, aluminium AG4, polycarbonate filters) was studied in an open seawater system, with a speed of 0,7 m s super(-1). The study was performed between May 1983 and May 1984, including seven experiments of 15 days each. Bacteria colonizing the metallic surfaces were counted by scanning electron microscopy, and bacteria colonizing the polycarbonate filters counted by epifluorescence microscopy. On the three substrata, bacterial colonization occurred in three successive stages: initial colonization, sometimes unsteady (about 10 super(4) bacteria cm super(-2)); intense colonization (10 super(4) bacteria cm super(-2) to about 10 super(7) bacteria cm super(-2) within one week); slow colonization beyond ten days. Although the seawater microflora of the experimental site (counted by epifluorescence microscopy) remained steady during the time of experiments, the amplitude and the duration of the different stages of colonization fluctuated according to the seasons. The comparative distribution of these bacterial patterns was studied in two sites of Brittany. In the Bay of Brest, a shallow and semi-enclosed area, the bacterial communities were dominated by the free-living forms, except during the phytoplankton bloom, which was accompanied by a clear increase of the particle-bound forms. Off the west coasts of Brittany, the Ushant front separates stratified water masses from mixed water masses. The distribution of particle-bound bacteria fluctuated according to the structure of the water masses and in mixed waters, was related to particulate matter from different origins. Results indicate that a previous knowledge of the distribution of bacterial patterns was necessary before the study of the role of the different components of the bacterial communities. It is supported by professional fishermen from Finistère and by the Regional fisheries committee of Brittany.
After a brief review of the way lobster stocks are managed worldwide, followed by the major biological and ecological features of red lobster and the state of fisheries in Europe and North Africa, the very poor state of the resource along French coast is borne out by the statistics of landings.
Various scenarios (not alternatives) to promote the rebuilding of the biomass are suggested: minimum landing size increase, seasonal closure of the fishery, berried females protection, no fishing zones.
The drift of phyllosoma larvae during their long larval stage is addressed using a 3-D hydrodynamic simulation model.

The aim of this study was to determine if differences in carbon incorporation could be detected among species, seasons and organs, and if so, whether it was consistent with their known energy-allocation patterns. After offering the new diet, isotope values of the different organs gradually shifted and significant differences among organs, seasons and species were found. A carbon incorporation index (CII) was calculated to compare the metabolic activity of each organ of the two species between day 0 and day 15. For both species, the digestive gland had the highest CII, the adductor muscle the lowest, while gonad and gills had intermediate values. The CII was generally much higher in P. maximus than in C. gigas, suggesting higher metabolic activity in this species. Seasonal differences in the CII were also observed for the two species and were interpreted as differences in metabolic activity in accordance with our energy allocation scenario. Therefore, stable isotope diet switching experiments appear to be of great value for assessing metabolic orientation in bivalves.Elsevier2006-10textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2006/publication-1202.pdfDOI:10.1016/j.orggeochem.2006.01.008https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/1202/Organic Geochemistry (0146-6380) (Elsevier), 2006-10 , Vol. 37 , N. 10 , P. 1359-1370eng2006 Elsevier Ltd All rights reservedinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

The technique is based on flow injection analysis (FIA) coupled with spectrophotometric detection. When direct injection of seawater was used, the detection limit was 1.6 nM, and the precision 7%, for a triplicate injection of a 4 nM standard. At low iron concentrations, on line preconcentration using a column filled with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) resin was used. The detection limit was 0.15 nM (time of preconcentration = 240 s), and the precision 6%, for a triplicate determination of a I nM standard, allowing the determination of Fe in most of the oceanic regimes, except the most depleted surface waters. The effect of temperature, pressure, salinity, copper, manganese, and iron speciation on the response of the analyser was investigated. The slope of the calibration curves followed a linear relation as a function of pressure (C-p = 2.8 x 10(-5)P + 3.4 x 10(-2) s nmol(-1), R-2 = 0.997, for Theta = 13 degrees C) and an exponential relation as a function of temperature (C-Theta = 0.009e(0.1030), R-2 = 0.832, for P = 3 bar). No statistical difference at 95% confidence level was observed for samples of different salinities (S = 0, 20, 35). Only very high concentration of copper (1000 x [Fe]) produced a detectable interference. The chemical analyser was deployed in the coastal environment of the Bay of Brest to investigate the effect of iron speciation on the response of the analyser. Direct injection was used and seawater samples were acidified on line for 80 s. Dissolved iron (DFe, filtered seawater (0.4 mu m), acidified and stored at pH 1.8) corresponded to 29 +/- 4% of Fe-a (unfiltered seawater, acidified in line at pH 1.8 for 80 s). Most of Fea (71 4%) was probably a fraction of total dissolvable iron (TDFe, unfiltered seawater, acidified and stored at pH 1.8). The age of the spawners ranged front three to seven years, females being larger and older than males. Population-level migration and reproduction were studied by counting the number of migrating fish, by estimating the sex ratio, and by counting the number of nocturnal spawning acts for three consecutive years starting in 2000. The influence of the environment, especially water temperature and discharge, was highlighted: temperature during migration may supplant the influence of water flow, although high flow could allow passage over the dam. Such factors partly explain the annual pattern of migration and reproduction during the spawning season. The study showed that the biological features and characteristics of this Population of allis shad in a small river were similar to those of western Atlantic stocks in large rivers. During twenty years, the activity has developed, from an opportunistic fishery, into a regular fishing enterprise for 36 fishermen, who derive from it most, if not all, of their revenue. The fishery is nowadays strictly regulated. It is subject to natural variations in the productivity of clam stocks, in relation with meteorological conditions which can strongly affect the stocks.
The bay of Douarnenez has been experiencing regular blooms of harmful algae, both of species leading to shellfish poisoning for human consumption, such as Dinophysis (Diarrhoeic Shellfish Poisoning) and Pseudo-nitzschia (Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning), and of species leading to mortalities of marine animals, such as Karenia mikimotoi. It has been suggested that the occurrence of these blooms can be related to hydrological phenomena, leading to limited exchanges between the bay's waters and the open sea, and to thermal stratification of the water column in summer.
The blooms can lead to slowed growth, as well as increased mortality of clams. Toxins accumulated in the clams also create risks for human consumption, which regularly lead to temporary fishing bans in the bay, in application of national and European health safety regulations.
The aim of the study is to analyse the consequences of these harmful algal blooms on the wedge clam fishery. The dynamics of the blooms having an impact on the fishery are described. The potential impacts of these blooms on clam biology, as well as their consequences on the economic status of fishermen, are analysed. In particular, the economic impacts of temporary fishing bans are discussed, taking into account their potential consequences on markets, and the adaptation strategies of fishermen
The analysis allows identification of further research needs to better evaluate the impacts of harmful algal blooms on the biology and harvesting of clams. Current hypothesis on the determinants of these environmental perturbations, in particular the amplifying role of nutrients of human origin, are also discussed.

The relationship between the average weight of eggs at the beginning of incubation and the size of the females shows that the egg size varies according to the female's size. Loss of eggs during incubation has been studied ; the average loss between the two extreme stages of incubation is around 27%. This is a lowered value of what accurs during the whole incubation period. Egg losses are greater for small females than for big females. The annual frequency of spawning and size at first maturity have been determined in for differents fishing effort than by the commercial size.

Later, impoverishment of traditional fishing grounds and closure, to French fleet, of foreign fishing area obliged a reconversion of potters toward crabs (edible crab and spider crab). Recently in the 80', development of a netting activity has restarted catches of spiny lobster (at a modest scale). Presently, the only reglementary measure concerning this species/metier is a national minimum legal size (total length) but European Commission has wished that a European MLS would be established. In that aim, this paper presents the main features of spiny lobster fishing in France, it brings data on reproduction and mean female size at first reproduction and it reviews various biometrical relationship published by European authors.

To enlighten and support potential related decisions, the Comité Régional des Pêches et Cultures Marines de Bretagne (Regional Committee for fishing and farming in Brittany), together with the ISTPM (Ifremer since 1984), conducted a survey on the exploited populations and gave a review of the involved Breton fleet.
This report shows the results of a survey conducted among fishermen, fishermen organisations, auction markets, shellfish traders and Administration in 1980. For each marine district of the Breton coast from Saint-Malo to Saint-Nazaire, the report introduces the distribution of the fleet, the characteristics and equipments of the boats, the fishing areas, calendar of activity, fishing efforts, catch rates and landings for lobster, edible crab and spider crab.

The goal of this IFREMER first use of a man opereted submersible for a fisheries study was to observe fishes and invertebrates in their environment, as well as fishing gears in operation. All the dives, 2 to 5 hours long, took place off Brittany in Atlantic. Five were shalower than 100 meters, nine between 100 and 200 meters, one at 400 meters and for deeper than 1000 meters.
Six dives have been dedicated to in situ study of the impact of fishing gears : observation of the geometry of a monkfish tramel net and analysis of losses during hauling ; tracks of a bottom trawl and relative efficiency trawl/submarine. A dive was aimed at geology and mineral sampling. Other dives were oriented to biological observations but whatever the main goal, all dives have brought informations on environment and species.

The industrial network faces many problems. However, it remains prosperous since it ranks fifth in the world for alginate production and third for caraghenanes'. This stability which seems safe on a middle term standpoint must not conceal the crisis which previously hit Fucus' exploitation.
Rightly so, being harvested until approximately 1950 for soil amendment purposes, coastal kelp (i.e. Fucus), was replaced by chemical fertilizers. Brittany's production which was reaching 180 000 cubic metre in the twenties, close to 200 000 tons of fresh kelp, would have become non existent if it had not been converted into seaweed meal for livestock feed. The market demand was then ranging between 30 and
40 000 tons of fresh kelp. When other plant proteins came on the market, especially soy flour, this activity was ruined.
The instability regarding the industrial use of seaweeds is therefore obvious, and as a result is also present in the economic networks derived from it.
However, if consumer attraction for nutritional seaweeds gets confirmed, we could be entering a new era characterised by better stability for the network and new technology repercussions especially for the aquaculture.
Facing tothe west of the British Channel and the Iroise Sea, which typical hard and rocky coastal sea bottoms produce crabs, lobsters and crayfish, North Brittany has developed a significant pot and net fishing activity. This group of species accounts for, in value, a third of all products disembarked between Saint-Malo and Camaret and half of the national crab production comes from the activity of that fleet.
This activity is marked by the general characteristics of coastal fishing and small scale fishing: strong flexibility allowing units to simultaneously or consecutively use several trades (line, long line, dredge,...), but nevertheless faces, structural problems, which up to now, have prevented the optimization of collective interests: unloading point dispersion, difficulties in evaluating production and effort developments, lack of market organisation, low level of professional and inter-professional organisation. To this context, we now need to ad increasing competition with British and Anglo-Normand fleet regarding common stocks exploitation and increasing importation from the United Kingdom and Ireland which most significant impact for the past three years has resulted in steady first sale average price reduction.
When adding to this picture specific problems related to crustacean demographic structures studies or simply growth modelisation, we can see the framework in which the program conducted for this resource was developed:
fleet typologies test (all trades West British Channel,
1986 file)
mapping resources, their quantitative and qualitative characteristics, stock or exploitation units identification,
- reconstituting production and effort statistical study charts and improving collecting tools, reconstituting abundance indexes by species and exploitation units
developing cooperative work with the British in order to analyse stocks as a whole geographically,
acquiring or increasing knowledge on species biology, especially regarding growth by setting up new technology, reproduction, and natural mortality factor pathology (identifying a dinoflagellata causing common crab winter seasonal deaths, since 1985)
- studying spider crab net selectivity, studying stocks, through direct evaluation (spider crab batch) or horde analysis

Caractéristiques et répartitionLoraine, IsabelleTeledetectionSeaweedSargassum muticumTélédétectionAlgueSargassum muticumSargassum muticum is a Japanese alga from the pheophycee class which has been introduced in Europe about fifteen years ago. It has greatly developed on account of its intrinsic characteristics (adaptation, growth speed, reproduction mode, etc...) and the favorable conditions it has encountered.
The nuisance it generates can be very high but no efficient fighting solution has been found yet. Only mechanical means can be considered on a one off basis in areas where eradication is indispensable. Any development is faced with the problem of pick up costs. However the most interesting development for Sargassum muticum would be to utilize it as flocculent for suspended organic substances.
Location updates for Sargassum muticum in France in 1989 did not show any new stricken regions but the algae seem to rather spread within already hit areas. The Brittany coast is almost entirely stricken. On a World scale, new localisation has been reported in Sweden.
Space born remote sensing by satellite seems to be an interesting way of studying littorals especially regarding seaweeds. Sargassum muticum can be localized on satellite images. Various imaging processing of the Morbihan gulf could lead to advantageous utilization of these algae all over that area.
Starting in 1986, the ANVAR contributed well appreciated financial support in order to set up an original seeding technique characterized by artificial seeding production in a laboratory.
This advantageous new way of seeding, i.e. independency from nature, yield increase and true competitiveness compared to traditional methods, nevertheless requires strict adherence to a procedure progressively elaborated during numerous trials in laboratory as well as at sea.
The program ended in July 1989 after testing the cultivation protocol on a 2 hectare exploitation scale, in order to better detect what could be improved to greatly increase productivity, facilitate the work of the harvester and to better adapt the operating mode to environmental conditions.
The object of this note is to present the full procedure. With this type of cultivation, details, more than great principles, often condition final results. Harvesting will be good if all operations are successively carried out with success. But, one missing detail can strongly affect the yield.
We will therefore follow each level of the process step by step, starting with the laboratory where seeding is prepared, up to the time where the harvest is brought into the harbour. For better comprehension, we will review the biology and reproduction cycle of the Undarla. As well as, in order to better appreciate method differences, a brief description of the traditional method used in Asia and problems that would arise if used on Atlantic shores.
We will attempt to present the economic analysis of Undarla cultivation, while integrating on one hand, hydrological and social conditions found on Brittany's shores and on the other hand, yields and production nutritive quality on a 2 hectare exploitation scale.

A low-power lamp was used for a compact, easy-to-handle and low-ozone-producing manifold. The influence of seawater matrix components was studied in detail using natural seawater and salt solutions spiked with DOP model compounds. Bromide was found to be the most inhibitory species in seawater. The work shows that most salt solutions referred to as artificial seawater are not satisfactory model matrices to test the actual seawater matrix effect. Since DOP recovered in undiluted seawater samples was about half that obtained in fresh water samples, the described method includes a 5- to 6-fold dilution of seawater samples. This simple procedure overcomes matrix effects and provides satisfactory DOP recovery. No pH effect was found in the 6-9 range corresponding to most natural waters. The standard deviation was 0.007 mu mol l(-1) and the limit of detection 0.02 mu mol l(-1). Linearity was tested up to 5 mu mol l(-1) of DOP, i.e. far above naturally occurring values. A throughput of 20 samples per hour is easily achieved. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Surface distribution of hDOC is influenced by organic matter input from the river Rhone and its estuary as well as the physical processes affecting the primary productivity such as coastal upwelling. By correlating hDOCu concentrations with total dissolved copper and other hydrochemical data such as salinity and dissolved organic carbon, it was possible to examine the behaviour of hDOCu in the water masses of different sources and ages.Marine organic matter has been shown to have high complexing capacity. Productive superficial and intermediate waters as well as deep waters showed relatively high and comparable complexing capacity indicating that old organic matter may have strong complexing sites. Identification of V tapelis has been previously performed using biochemical criteria and serological procedures. All of these methods are time consuming and ill-adapted to individual screening. This study describes an oligonucleotidic probe (Vt446) and two PCR primers, deduced from the 16S rDNA sequence, allowing a fast and specific V tapetis identification using dot blot hybridisation and species-specific primed PCR (SSP-PCR). The probe and primers have been tested on 60 strains, including referenced Vibrio sp., Gram negative and positive bacteria, marine bacteria samples and isolated clam bacteria. For all the 19 V tapetis strains, the results of PCR assays consistently corroborated those of the agglutination tests. The detection limit was estimated to be 10(2) CFU ml(-1). The SSP-PCR method has resulted in V tapetis detection in larvae, m diseased clams, and in asymptomatic broodstock clams that later developed BRD. In conclusion, the two SSP-PCR primers were useful for direct and fast identification of V tapetis strains isolated in clams, and are well suited for the screening of individual R. philippilnarum broodstock clams and larvae from the hatchery. The harmful effects of pollutants on species inhabiting these estuarine zones are not well known. Among marine species, bivalve mollusks---particularly Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas-may serve a model of interest. The species is sedentary and filter-feeding, which favors bioaccumulation of pollutants in their tissues. Oysters may be suitable for studies on disturbance by pollutants of physiological activities, among which defense mechanisms are poorly documented in bivalves. In this study, effects of pollutants on hemocyte functions were monitored in Pacific oyster, C. gigas. Hemocytes were exposed in vitro to selected pollutants. The strategy for investigating the effects of pollutants on hemocyte functions is based on several biomarkers, which is more relevant than that of published papers based on single-endpoint experiments. Pollutants belonging to the most important groups of xenobiotics (PAHs, PCBs, and pesticides) were selected and their effect on hemocyte activities was analyzed using flow cytometry. Twenty-three pollutants were tested and eight of them showed significant modulation of hemocyte activities. PAHs and PCB 77 induced a decrease of hemocyte activity after an incubation periods of 4 and 24 h at 200 mu mol/L. Three pesticides (2,4D, paraoxon, and chlorothalonil) modulated hemocyte activities. A mixture of eight pesticides also decreased phagocytotic activity. This study is one of the first to investigate the effects of so many pollutants on hemocyte functions at the same time and therefore allows a real comparison of different pollutant effects.Kluwer2006textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2006/publication-1695.pdfDOI:10.1007/s10565-006-0011-6https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/1695/Cell Biology and Toxicology (0742-2091) (Kluwer), 2006 , Vol. 22 , N. 1 , P. 1-14eng2006 Springerinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

The deleterious effects of biofilm growth in the marine environment are numerous and include : energy losses due to increased fluid frictional resistance or to increased heat transfer resistance, risk of corrosion induced by micro-organisms, loss of optical properties, quality control and safety problems. Antifouling agents are generally used to protect surfaces from being affected by such a biofilm. These agents are toxic and can be persistent, causing harmful environmental and ecological effects. Moreover, the use of biocides and regular cleaning considerably increase the maintenance costs of marine industries.
An improved knowledge of the biofilm adhesion mechanisms is needed for the development of an alternative approach to the currently-used antifouling agents. The aim of this study is to characterise the chemical composition of the molecules first interacting with stainless steel during the period immediately following immersion in natural seawater and to elucidate the kinetics of the adsorbtion process. Proteins are shown to adhere very rapidly, closely followed by carbohydrates. The distribution on the surface of the organic molecules is also examined. The adsorbate on the surface is not so much a continuous film as a heterogeneous deposit, whose average thickness varies widely. The cleaning procedures used affect the adsorption kinetics. In particular, cleaning with hexane results in slower adsorption of nitrogen-containing species than does cleaning in acetone.

This Doppler centroid differs from a predicted signal based on the predicted motion of the satellite and Earth. This anomaly, converted to a surface Doppler velocity U-D, appears to be of geophysical origin. Two wide-swath images over the Gulf Stream around Cape Hatteras suggest that U-D contains high-resolution information on surface currents, while on a global scale, UD is found to vary with the wind speed in the range direction. A simple quantitative forward model is proposed, based on a practical two-scale decomposition of the surface geometry and kinematics. The model represents the effect of the wind through the wave spectrum, and gives U-D approximate to gamma U-10 parallel to + U-c parallel to, with U-10 parallel to and U-c parallel to as the 10 m wind speed and quasi-Eulerian current in the line of sight of the radar projected on the sea surface, respectively, and g as a coefficient function of the wind speed, wave development, and radar geometry. It is found that for an incidence angle of 23 degrees, gamma approximate to 0.3 for moderate winds and fully developed seas. This model is validated with a global data set of ASAR Wave Mode observations, with colocated model winds, acquired over the global ocean during the years 2003 and 2004. The Doppler signal therefore provides the signed parameter U-D that can be used to reduce the wind direction ambiguity in the inversion of high-resolution wind fields from SAR imagery. A qualitative validation of current effects is shown for the English Channel where tidal currents dominate. Thus it should be possible to combine this previously ignored geophysical Doppler signal with traditional information on sea surface roughness, in order to provide very high resolution wind and current fields.

Description, préparation à une modélisation et à une simulation des procédures de gestionCharuau, AnatoleIfremerProcedures of managementmodelingBay of BiscayMixed fisheryLobsterHake1 - Study's goals review The management of Norway Lobster and Hake fisheries can be considered as the most important issue in the Gascogne gulf. Calculation methods used to evaluate prediction variations under various efforts and mesh constraints all pinpoint to the crucial role narrow mesh fishing plays in Hakes' Northern stock status. The involvement of Gascogne gulf Norway Lobster fisheries regarding Hakes over exploitation seems over dimensioned when comparing the size of both of these stocks. Hake stocks spread from Northern Great Britain to Northern Spain, while Norway Lobster stocks are located in the Gascogne gulf's mud flats. The biological solution is well known and consists in globally increasing mesh nets to 80mm which would bring up Hakes yield to its most. It would be unreal to pretend all parties involved in Hake stocks will come to use them. For now, it is mostly an economical issue since many vessels continue on with an exploitation scheme dating from the 60's and fish on coastal mud flats which are the most exploited zones and where their catch is detrimental to juvenile class Hakes and Norway Lobsters. Considering our limited time, this study will cover bio- economical modelisation preparation. You will therefore find a description of fisheries and an exploitation assessment based on 1986's available data.
2 - Accomplished work
2. 1 Fishery description
Presenting the problems and preparing ulterior analyses was first and foremost. Norway Lobster vessels supposedly, according to evaluation models used, test immature Hakes in such a manner that all stock exploitation is jeopardized. Norway Lobster distribution is closely linked to the nature of the ocean floor since it can only build its habitat on fine sediment. Hakes' habitat is not as restrictive and is linked to food supply, especially euphausiid shrimps, so they can be found on sandy and sandy-sedimental floors. Norway Lobsters are sought by a fleet of 400 to 450 ships which characteristics widely vary according to their home port. On the northern part, fisheries are close to exploitation ports where Norway Lobsters and miscellaneous catch yield is sufficient to support an older fleet. On the southern part, the structure is diversified and flexibility usually rules, more modern vessels can easily switch their target on a seasonal or daily basis. Globally, Hakes' northern stocks are slightly on the rise. This rise is probably due to global mesh size increase, even if slight and a decrease on fishing effort where immature species are caught. Norway Lobster stocks unloading is stable or slightly lower and yields, as far as northern fishery are concerned, vary and oscillate between ±15 to ±20 % at about an average of 100 kg/day. Biological parameters used in the evaluations for each species are those used in CIEM and CEE work cells. Among those parameters, those describing growth are the greatest. For Hakes, an intermediary growth equation between males and females has been used. For Norway Lobsters, both sexes are treated separately. Simulations were carried out according to 3 types of data: Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort variations. Norway Lobster vessels mesh increase. Norway Lobster vessels fishing effort decrease or mesh increasing go along in the same direction for Hake and Norway Lobster stock production (chart A and B). Lastly, a brief study on results evaluation significance was done to modify: - the size of Hake rejects by Norway Lobster vessels. The range of sizes stays the same but the amount in each class varies according to the same percentage. - Norway Lobsters growth parameters, both values used (L» = 76 mm and k = 0.11 for males, L°° = 56 mm and k = 0.14 for females) representing the "high" hypothesis. In the first case, a 20% error rate for rejects evaluation with 60 mm mesh would only bring a 3% modification rate on global stock production. Those first results are contradicting usual evaluation conclusions and it will be necessary to recalculate by modifying the size class step. In the second case, to decrease L» and increase growth speed, in time production variations remain within usual inter annual fluctuations. In all figure cases, calculations confirming greater yield for in time production through hypothetical mesh size increase to 60 mm, are definitely well founded.

The results gathered during this experiment permitted the analysis of S. salar production during the juvenile and adult stages from immersion of unfed fry of Irish origin in small nursery streams. The annual production during the first year represented 72% of the total production of two years of growth. Adult runs into the nursery stream were observed between mid-November and mid-December. These runs were initiated by high increases of flow rates of the nursery stream. The whole of the adult population is constituted by late grilses whose female. Their rate of return was estimated to be 5,8%. Medicine of Brest undertook a series of theoretical and applied research projects concerning the problem of flat oyster digestive gland disease, due to Marteilia refringens, the primary economic problem of that time.
In 1978, in the research report of Contract C.N.E.X.O. 77/1690, the main results obtained since the beginning of the study of the parasitosis were made public.
The present report has as its objective to show:
- The results obtained in 1978-1979 while monitoring the parasitosis, and most especially the epidemiological evolution of the disease;
- Information concerning the presence of other infectious diseases detected in Ostrea edulis, but of currently limited pathological importance.
- The research in progress on tumorous processes in the flat oyster.
- les résultats obtenus en 1978-1979 dans la poursuite de la surveillance de la parasitose, et tout spécialement l'évolution épidémiologique de la maladie ;
- les renseignements concernant la présence d'autres maladies infectieuses détectées chez Ostrea edulis, mais d'importance pathologique actuellement limitée ;

Methods and Results: Our experimental method is based on a natural biofilm formed by mono-incubation of the marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp. D41 in sterile natural sea water in a 96 wells polystyrene microplate. The 4'6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) dye was used to quantify adhered bacteria in each well. Total measured fluorescence in wells was correlated with the amount of bacteria showing a detection limit of one bacterium per 5 µm2 and quantifying 2 x 107 to 2 x 108 bacteria adhered per cm2. The antifouling properties of three commercial surface active agents and chlorine were tested by this method in prevention of adhesion and also in detachment of already adhered bacteria. The marine bacterial adhesion inhibition rate depending on agent concentration showed a sigmoid shape like dose-response curve.
Conclusions: This test is well adapted for a rapid and quantitative first screening of antifouling agents directly in seawater in the early steps of marine biofilm formation.
Significance and impact of the study: In contrast with usual screenings of antifouling products which detect a bactericidal activity, this test is more appropriate to screen antifouling agents for bacterial adhesion removal or bacterial adhesion inhibition activities. This screening test focuses on antifouling properties of products, especially the first steps of marine biofilm formation.

This sedimentary sequence allows the documentation of changes in climate seasonality during the Holocene. Here we show preliminary results of diatom communities, lithic grain distribution and titanium content measured on two 30 cm long sequences of thin sections. The two sequences originate from two different climate regimes, the colder Neoglacial and the warmer Hypsithermal. Proxies were measured at microscale resolution on 25 laminations for the Neoglacial and 14 laminations for the Hypsithermal. The two sequences reveal alternating light-green and dark-green laminae. Light laminae result from low terrigenous input and high sea-ice edge diatom fluxes and are interpreted to represent the spring season. Dark laminae result from high terrigenous input mixed with a diversified open ocean diatom flora and are interpreted to represent the summer-autumn season. The two sequences therefore resolve annual couplets composed of one light plus one dark lamina. Variations in the relative thickness of laminations and annual couplets, associated with diatom assemblage changes, are observed in each sequence and between the two sequences giving information on interannual to millennial changes in environmental conditions.SAGE Publications2006-12textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/2006/publication-2275.pdfDOI:10.1177/0959683606069414https://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/2275/The Holocene (0959-6836) (SAGE Publications), 2006-12 , Vol. 16 , N. 8 , P. 1137-1147eng2006 Sageinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessrestricted use

This report is composed of:
- an IFREMER study on the historical evolution of the Breton fleet created using data from the "halieutic observations system" (SIH) and surveys on the economic activity of fishing ships. The study is most interested in the Mor Braz and the Sea of Iroise sites.
- an analysis by CEDEM of the legal and economic aspects of fishing along the coastal strip through two case studies: A seasonal break from bottom trawling and the diversification of professional fishing towards tourist and recreational economic activities.
- a study by ENSA of Rennes on the evolution of leisure fishing in the Gulf of Morbihan.

Breeding occurs in winter and spring and the fish are stenothermic when breeding. Zones yielding most eggs and larvae may bear no relation to the supposed areas of origin of fish with different mean vertebral counts. It was thought that each main region of the Bay (Armorican massif, Aquitanian basins and Cantabrian region) had its own race, but this may not be so, and the racial significance of the vertebral mean should be re-investigated.

Hydrology and zooplanktonLe Fevre-lehoerff, GenevièveAt a neap tide, an attempt was made to follow the quantitative and qualitative nycthemeral variations in a planktonic population under the influence of the tide. Simultaneous study was made of changes in the physical medium and the biological material present. Physical measurements at 4 depths, of salinity, density, and speed and direction of current, were made every hr and eventually correlated with plankton samples made at 2 hourly intervals. Physical results are shown in graphs and tables and an analysis given of the zooplankton studied. Examination of the biovol obtained by sedimentation revealed a greater density of organisms at night, copepods forming the principal component of the plankton. Further studies were made of the copepods, various groups being recognized according to the relative effect on numbers of tide and time of day. Population fluctuations were concluded to be related to day-night light intensity alternation, influence of tides, and secondarily, influence of currents.

Since their catch is a significant contribution to the country's economy (15,000 tonnes of sardines in 1967, 6,000 in 1968, 8,000 in 1969 and 4,427 of anchovies were caught the same year), it seemed necessary to specify the breeding conditions of these fish and the location of their breeding grounds, then to try to forecast fishing stocks. In this research work, we will study more particularly the year 1968, which seems to us very representative and we will compare the results with those of 1964, 1965, 1966 (March), which we have already published and from 1969, which have not yet been published. For May 1966 and the year 1967, we will refer to the research of L'HERROU (soon to be published). Hence, the results from these 6 years, obtained from 2,107 samplings from 22 campaigns, we will attempt to give precise indications about egg-laying sectors, spawning season and favourable environmental conditions. Each year, the campaigns have been carried out quarterly (March, May, July, November), mostly covering the continental shelf of the Celtic Sea at the bottom of the Gulf of Gascony. However, in 1965, the prospecting was done mainly on the open sea, with several catches along the 8th meridian of longitude O, and, in March 1966 as in 1969, the Celtic shelf was not included. The net used is of the Hensen type, 70 cm in diameter at the opening and 2.50 metres overall length. It was used most of the time for vertical fishing between 100 metres and the surface or the vicinity of the bottom and the surface. The ascent speed was 1 metre in 3 seconds. Each harvest of plankton was accompanied by hydrological measurements, especially temperature and salinity at various levels.
oai:archimer.ifremer.fr:23912010-04-01GROUP:ZABRILANGUE:ENMarine Molluscan Production Trends in France: From Fisheries to AquacultureGoulletquer, PhilippeHeral, Maurice(NOT controlled OCR ) The main activity in French shellflshing is culturing. Most culture involves oysters, Grassostrea gigas, and Ostrea edulis; mussels, Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis; and to a lesser extent the scallop, Pecten maximus, and the exotic Manila clam, Tapes philippinarum. Wild species harvested include the whelk, Buccinum undatum; abalone, Haliotis tuberculata; and bivalves, such as the cockle, Cerasioderma edule, pectinids, Chlamys varia and Aequipecten opercularis; and several clams, e.g., Mercenaria mercenana and Venerupis rhomboïdes. Recreational landings are substantial. The flat oyster, 0. edulis, has been part of human diets for centuries. Natural beds were exploited through the Middle Ages until the last century by handpicking at low tide and by boat dredging. The effort led to overfishing, and between 1853 and 1859, a repletion program was initiated, mainly based on using wooden spat collectors, which marked the beginning of French oyster culture. In I860, a shortage of flat oysters led to the introduction of C. anguki/a. Oyster production increased to a record high of 85,000 t of C. angulata and 28,000 t of O. edulis in 1960, but diseases hit C. angulata and led to its disappearance. In 1972, G gigaswas introduced, spread rapidly by natural spatfall, and facilitated a fast industry recover)'. Oyster production now is 150,000 t of C. gigas and 2,000 t of O. edulis a year. Oysters often are deployed in ponds for fattening before marketing. M. edulis is produced on the Atlantic coast, while M. galloprovincialis is mainly produced on the Mediterranean coast. Currently, 1,613 km of bouchots are used to grow mussels, yielding 58,000 t/year; longlines yield 30,000 t; onbottom culture, 2,000-3,000 t, and the public fishery, 20,000 to 30,000 t. The native clams, Tapes decussatus and T. pullustra have been harvested. T. philippinarum was introduced and hatchery cultured; production peaked at 500 t, but the clam has colonized natural areas. The common scallop, P. maximus, and Mediterranean scallop, P. jacobaeus, are harvested by dredging. The whelk is fished with pots; landings are about 15,000 t/year. Abalones are harvested by hand at low tide or by diving. Cockle harvests total about 10,00 t/year. The entire shellflshing industry employs more than 20,000 permanent people and 30,000 part-time workers. Most shellfish are marketed fresh in the shell, but some species, e.g., clams and scallops, are marketed frozen.NOAA1997textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/1997/publication-2391.pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/2391/NOAA Tech. We also evaluated the potential of the cryptophyceae Rhodomonas salina as a food source for these larvae. Two flagellates, Isochrysis aff. galbana (T) and Pavlova lutheri (P), and two diatoms, Chaetoceros gracilis (C) or Skeletonema costatum (S), were tested as two ternary diets, namely PTC and PTS. PTC and PTS were compared with diets that also included R. salina (R). The addition of R. salina and the replacement of C. gracilis by S. costatum in the traditional hatchery diet seem to be two interesting alternatives for increasing the productivity of larval scallop culture and improving the metamorphosis rate. With these two diets, larval growth increased and metamorphosis was observed to occur more rapidly. Moreover, our results showed that the addition of R. salina significantly improved the overall condition of the larvae by promoting an increase in organic matter and total lipids. This accumulation of lipids during ontogeny seems to promote larvae to grow and to complete metamorphosis more rapidly than with the other diets. The level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the algae could also at least partially explain the results obtained, since the PUFA level of C gracilis was about half those of S. costatum and R. salina. oai:archimer.ifremer.fr:24432010-04-01GROUP:ZABRILANGUE:ENScallop Sea Bed Culture in EuropeDao, Jean-claudeFleury, Pierre-gildasBarret, Jean(Not controled OCR) In recent years, scallop production throughout the world has been expanding at a fast rate, due to developments in aquaculture. Hanging as well as sea bed cultures produced good results in some countries. This latter method has been successful for Patinopeeten ye.ssoen.sis and Pecien novaezelandiae in Japan and New Zealand respectively. In Europe, only Peeten ma.ximus as a local species seems appropriate for development by a sea ranching production: the market demand is strong, the fisheries are closed due to over exploitation and hanging cultures are not economically feasible. Experiments in sea bed cultures started in the 1980s in France and extended to Ireland, Scotland and Norway. The technique involves the production of juveniles by spat collection and in hatcheries, and on-growing on the sea bed, on the natural scallop ground or in equivalent sites. Animals are then released at the minimum size at which they are capable of surviving. Only France has a full set of results suitable for analysis to determine the main factors affecting sea ranching.These results are not sufficient for the study of stock enhancement, which requires a longer term approach.This is because the species are very fragile and slow growing. In the Bay of Brest (France), hatchery production and intermediate hanging cultures are controlled and more than 3 million spat are released into the fishing grounds. Recapture rates have reached 25%, but depend on the seeding season and the vitality of the animals. In 1997, the population was composed of three animals from aquaculture for every one from the natural population. Production costs, recapture rates and market prices are encouraging. The management of the fishing grounds and the regulation of the resource access are key factors. However, results have proved the major role of the ecosystem.Blackwell Science1999textArticleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/1999/publication-2443.pdfhttps://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00000/2443/Stock enhancement and sea ranching (Book chap.) oai:archimer.ifremer.fr:24512022-02-14GROUP:ZABRILANGUE:FRLANGUE:ENAction concertée sur les semis de coquille Saint-Jacques en Europe (1993-1996)Concerted action on scallop seabed cultivation in Europe (1993-1996) final reportFleury, Pierre-gildasDao, Jean-claudeMikolajunas, John-paulMinchin, DanielNorman, MarkStrand, OivindFaced with the decline of scallop {Pecten maximus) fisheries and high costs of ongrowing in suspension, scallop seabed cultivation appeared to be the most suitable technique for European conditions. A three-year European Concerted Action supported by European Union and Norway (associated country) joined together four teams involved in scallop seedings :
- IFREMER Brest / laboratory Molluscs, in Brittany (France), a national institute of ocean research (co-ordinator of the Concerted Action) ;
- Connemara Shellfish Co-op, in Connemara, County of Galway (Ireland), a fishermen's co-operative ;
- Seafish Ardtoe, in Scotland (United Kingdom), an institute provided by the fishing industry ;
- Institute of Marine Research, in Bergen (Norway), a national institute of research.
Underwater observations were made possible by the important diving team (8 to 10 people) set up by the group, and its video equipment (up to 4 underwater remote video cameras including one in a submarine robot). Three common field works with divers and video, could be carried out. They first required the setting up of a common diving code of practice including the different national regulations. They also enabled the comparison of various underwater sampling methods. These common field works studied :
- the recessing behaviour and vitality of juvenile scallops at seeding in Autumn, according to three sizes of juveniles (Brest, France, 1993) ; which pointed out the need of recovery for re-seeded scallops ;
- the impact of placing crab traps around the perimeter of plots seeded with juvenile scallops, on the survival of the scallops (Connemara, Ireland, 1994) ; which gave significant effect results with the smaller scallops (30-35 mm) ;
- the effect of placing an alternative prey (mussels) together in the seeding area of juvenile scallops, on the survival of the scallops (Ardtoe, Scotland, 1995) ; which gave some preliminary results with weak mussels only (after aerial exposure in the sun).
Concurrently, four table meetings were planned for preparation of the field works, as far as for active discussions about the know-how and bottlenecks in seabed cultivation. These meetings facilitated the gathering of up-to-date informations about scallop culture in Europe and in the most important producing countries (Japan, Canada, New-Zealand). In France, scallop seedings now provide one-third to one-half of the local scallop fishery in Brest Bay (90 boats). In Ireland, seedings to enhance the natural scallop fisheries are continuing in two areas and a private company harvested 8 tonnes of bottom cultured scallops in 1996. In the United Kingdom, the granting of the first commercial Several Fishery Orders in February 1993 (giving a legal ownership of the natural or seeded stock of a defined seabed area) increased the interest of scallop farms to turn from suspending techniques to bottom cultivation. In Norway, a governmental report, on the long term strategy of the Norwegian aquaculture, proposed the scallop Pecten maximus, along with the Atlantic halibut as main species for aquaculture development. The Concerted Action identified and analysed 3 factors to improve scallop seabed cultivation :
- the fitness of the seeding sites (biological and socio-economical factors) ;
- the fitness of juvenile scallops (size and vitality) ;
- the fitness of practices, especially in order to avoid prédation.
Sites :
Scallop seabed cultivation is an extensive aquaculture (sea ranching) requiring broad coastal areas. Criteria of choice for seeding sites, either biological and socio-economical, could be listed and ranked. The abundance of predators, especially crabs, is an important criteria in the choice of a seeding site. In addition, rights to access and to exploit such coastal areas appeared different within European countries, all regulations being unsuited to vast areas under coastal management by professional groups.
Juveniles :
Fitness of the juvenile scallops comprises two elements, their size and their vitality. Convenient size could range from 20 to 60 mm and was determined in each area according to local constraints in sites and in spat supply. The vitality of animals was identified as an important factor, but was marginally studied in the Concerted Action (some biochemistry in the French field work, 1993), failing to have a satisfactory diagnostic tool. The perfecting of a simple test could enable profitable comparisons in future works.
Practices :
At present, seeding practices in sea ranching concern only the choice of the seeding season, of the seeding size of animals and of the seeding density ; in future, they would benefit from regarding also the animal acclimatization in order to restore or improve their vitality and the site preparation aiming to decrease the predator density (potting) or activity upon scallops (alternative prey). Faced with increasing numbers of aquaculture S.M.E. or fishery professional organisations involved in scallop seabed cultivation in Europe, the national Research and Development authorities have more or less involved themselves in scallop studies and coastal management. However this needs long term programmes, demanding basic research (physiology), experiments in the wild (diving observations), in an environment which remains poorly known (need of ecology) and poorly regulated (need of law).
- IFREMER Brest / laboratoire Mollusque, en Bretagne (France), un institut national de recherche océanologique (coordinateur de l'Action Concertée) ;
- la Connemara Shellfish Co-op, au Connemara, Comté de Galway (Irlande), une coopérative de pêcheurs ;
- Seafish Ardtoe, en Ecosse (Royaume-Uni), un institut financé par le secteur de la pêche ;
- l'enfouissement et la vitalité des juvéniles de coquille Saint-Jacques lors d'un semis d'automne, selon trois tailles de juvéniles (Brest, France, 1993) ; ce qui a mis en évidence le besoin des animaux d'une récupération de vitalité après semis ;
- l'impact sur la survie des coquilles, de casiers à crabes placés autour des zones de semis (Connemara, Irlande, 1994) ; ce qui a donné des résultats significatifs pour le lot des plus petites coquilles (30-35 mm) ;
- l'aptitude des sites de semis (facteurs biologiques et socio-économiques) ;
- l'aptitude des jeunes coquilles (taille et vitalité) ;

Shipment of these chemicals by boats and barge transiting along coastal marine route are numerous. Recent examples of chemical spills as Eiwa Maru (2002) sinking with 5000 T of xylène from 20 nm of Tokyo and less far from our coastline the Ievoli Sun (2000) which sank and release 1000 T of styren has raised concern about the general lack of information of the fate of chemicals at sea and the impact on fauna and flora.
The goal of this study is to characterize the behaviour of some selected chemicals at sea in order to evaluate the cinetic of natural dispersion, emulsification and evaporation. This study is done in three scale : in laboratory with a new methodologie created for this purpose, in a pilot scale (in Brest Harbour) and in open sea. In order to complete this physico chemical study, a biological test was also performed to evaluate the impact of chemicals on mussels (mytilus edulis), the lysosomal membrane stability is assessed by the NRRT assay.

Data from 604 observations gathered over a 14-year period (1988-2002) were analyzed, and the results used to show the relationship between biotic indices, environmental variables and classic descriptors (e.g., number of species, total abundance, dominance index, ES(50) and Shannon/Brillouin diversities). Though the specific ecological quality (EcoQ) values calculated with the various indices were different, the overall trend of the results was similar. Synthesizing the values produced by the six indices used in the study allowed attribution of a high to good EcoQ status to the Bay of Seine and a moderate EcoQ to the estuary. The mesh size used when processing samples was proved to have no effect in winter on the EcoQ values for either body of water. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. In order to better understand their sedimentary dynamic and morphologic evolution through time, two submarine canyons, the Bourcart canyon in the Gulf of Lion and the Capbreton canyon in the Bay of Biscay have been studied. The Bourcart canyon, located at the shelf break at 110 m water depth, is disconnected from direct sediment supply during sea-level highstand and is considered as inactive. The Capbreton canyon's head is located 400 m off the coastline, and is disconnected from the Adour river since the 16th century. Bathymetric, core, radioisotopic and current data showed that these canyons are active during sea-level highstand despite the fact that they are not directly connected to any fluvial system. Regional climatic and hydrodynamic processes, like dense water cascading or storm events, govern sediment erosion and transport, and allow coarse-grained sedimentation within the canyon. Seismic and geotechnical data also permitted to characterise the architecture and nature of sediments deposited within the canyons. Bourcart and Capbreton canyons morphologic evolution during the last climatic cycle is linked to sea-level variations, episodes of connexion/disconnection with a fluvial system and occurrence of high frequency climatic events.

The Iroise Sea population is localized in Western Brittany and characterized by a seasonal migration occurring on a large bathymetric and habitat gradient while the Seine Bay population, in the Eastern English Channel, remains in a more homogeneous environment during its migration. In the Iroise Sea population, delta C-13 Values increased significantly both with body size and age, revealing a shift towards "benthic-component" prey with spider crab growth. On the contrary, neither body size nor ageing gave rise to a significant trophic level change (derived from the delta N-15). In this M. brachydactyla population, the seasonal migrations from coastal waters in summer to offshore habitats in winter involved significant but slight differences in both delta C-13 and delta N-15. In the Seine Bay population, low variations for both carbon and nitrogen were recorded related to either sex or size or seasonal migration. Thus, the delta C-13 and delta N-15 variability in the spider crab depends on the availability and diversity of prey in its different living habitats, as well as on the morphological aptitudes of individuals to feed on prey (individual's size). That makes Guilvinec "an ideal laboratory for analysing the fish business in all its complexity, from the catch to marketing". The fishermen of the Guilvinec district are spread out in 3 ports: Guilvinec, Loctudy, and Saint Guénolé. Each port has its speciality (example: Guilvinec's speciality is monkfish). Each fleet is composed of dinghies, coastal trawls, seafaring fish trawls, and seafaring crayfish trawls.
The subject chosen for this master's theses is the study of the fishing strategy of a seafaring ship, the Kerflous. This work was difficult because it reached into the sphere of the professional secret. The Kerflous works at the boundary of sectors 7H1, 7H2, E1, BA1 and BA2 of the CIEM delimitation. The choice of fishing sectors by the skipper is made based on many technical, sociological, and economic factors.
This paper introduces the methodology of the survey, factors influencing the choice of fishing areas and finally the fishing areas, their exploitation and fishing tactics from 1971 to 1985.

The hydrogeological characteristics of the watersheds had an influence on these relationships. In this respect, river basins characterized by prevalent surficial water runoff exhibited higher correlation coefficients and lower lag times between river flow sequences and nitrate concentrations.
The multi-year trend in riverine nitrate concentrations indicated a fourfold increase over 30 years. Nevertheless, 80% of rivers exhibited a recent decrease in nitrate concentrations, independent of inter-annual river flow fluctuations. The highest annual rates of nitrate decrease corresponded to river basins for which rapid surficial runoff, a sign of lower hydrogeological "inertia", was prevalent. This result may be due to a decrease in agricultural pressure (i.e., a decrease of organic manure and mineral fertilizer use since the 1990's) in watersheds with a fairly short reaction time (between 2 and 10 years). Nevertheless this decrease in nitrate concentrations must continue in order to reach concentrations low enough to limit macroalgal eutrophication in coastal zones and to attain levels that are safe for human consumption as drinking water.

In the north of the gulf, this activity is exclusive, in the south, immature hake are also caught, because the crayfish areas coincide, in part, with the nurseries of the northern stock of this species.
Management of these fisheries, called mixed, of crayfish and hake is one of the greatest problems of the Gulf of Gascony. All assessments tend to show the responsibility of the crayfish boats in the future of the hake stock. The solution is likely to pass through a generalised increase of the 80 mm meshing that would lead, eventually, the hake stock yield to its maximum, but would eliminate a great many trades that are only practicable for the moment by using small meshing: crayfish boats, shrimp boats, etc.
It was shown moreover that the times of maximum abundance of hake and crayfish do not necessarily coincide. Indeed, hake does not swim along the bottom but rather moves in the channel of water. There are therefore definitely crayfish areas and hake areas, but overlapping such that a ship passing from one to the other during a single pass cannot judge in advance the immediate composition of its catch.
The method used for describing these mixed fisheries and providing a solution to their problems of management relies on simulations aided by a bio-economic model known as "compartmental". This structure was adopted to be able to take into account all possible scenarios of the fleets' strategies. The fishery is first divided into geographic elements corresponding to the specific sedimentary structures where the stocks of exploited species are concentrated, the major constraint being the limits of these elements corresponding to those usually employed in fishing statistics, since it is based on these statistics that we can determine the fleets' profiles and their target species. The ratios between the fleet and the species are measured by calculating the fishing power.
- maillage de 50 mm pour la langoustine et 65 mm pour le poisson ;
- l'augmentation de l'effort ;

PCBs (16 single congeners), pp'-DDE and HCB were measured in hepatopancreas, gonads and muscle: in all, 175 samples were analysed. The spider crab was the only species found in the five sampling sites, thus enabling comparison between areas. Specimens from Antifer were much more contaminated (Sigma(16)PCBs in hepatopancreas = 2000-4000 ng g(-1) dry weight) than those from other sites (50-1000 ng g(-1) d.w.). Among all the three species, the spider crab appeared more contaminated by PCBs than the edible crab, by a factor 2-3, probably in relation with specific differences in their life cycle. There was no difference due to the gender of the species. Within the different analysed tissues, contamination levels increased from muscle to gonads and hepatopancreas in relation with the fat content. A very similar PCB composition was observed in all samples, PCB fingerprints being characterised by the relative importance of the more persistent PCB congeners: CB153, 138, 180, 187, and 118. Finally, these results were compared to recent food regulations first of maximum marker PCB intake and secondly of maximum dioxin-like PCB intake. By considering the muscle, all samples were far below the regulatory limits; for hepatopancreas and gonads, however, some samples were unfit for human consumption. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Here, a mass-balance trophic (Ecopath) model of the Mont Saint Michel Bay (MSMB) was developed, to analyze the bay's functioning as an ecosystem. This bay, intensively exploited by fishing and for shellfish farming, is also suffering from the proliferation of the gastropod Crepidula fornicata, an exotic species.
The MSMB model has 18 compartments, from the primary producers to top predators, and emphasizes the large biomass of filter feeders. The model identified the MSMB as a highly productive ecosystem controlled largely from the bottom-up, and strongly impacted by huge biomasses of filter feeders. However, the low transfer efficiency rates imply that a large part of the primary production is not transferred upward to higher trophic levels, but is lost in high hydrodynamic exchanges and in the trophic impasse represented by a large biomass of Crepidula fornicata.

In a previous work, we found that natural food availability can sustain the full cost of gametogenesis in optimal environmental conditions. The present study analyses the lipid and sterol classes' composition of several tissues during gametogenesis. In female gonads, the quantity of triacylglycerol (TG) increased parallel to gametogenesis from December (spawned gonads, 0.7 mg g(-1) or 7% of total lipids) to June (ripe gonads, 52 mg g(-1) or 66% of total lipids). In male gonads sampled in June, the concentration of TG (0.7 mg g(-1) or 3.5% of total lipids) and esterified sterols was significantly lower than in female gonads. Total phospholipids (PL) increased two-fold in female gonads of scallops sampled in June compared to the other months, which could be a result of oocyte production and growth, but no differences were found in the concentration of PL or in free sterol composition between male and female gonads. TG concentration in the digestive gland was similar in December and February (37-3 8 mg g- 1 or 68% of total lipids), but increased eight-fold by April and remained high in June (252-277 mg g(-1) or 90% of total lipids). Together with the increase in esterified sterols, these data suggest an increase in food availability during these months. A lack of decrease of TG levels in digestive gland during gonad development is in accordance to sufficient food availability in this location to satisfy the energetic demands of gametogenesis. Cholesterol was the principal sterol found in all tissues; its concentration, as well as the concentration of several phytosterols, remained constant throughout the maturation process, except in digestive gland where they increased from December to June, further supporting an increased availability of food. However, the presence of several phytosterols in substantial concentrations, mainly brassicasterol and 24-methylenecholesterol in gonad and somatic tissues, further supports a specific physiological role of these sterols in pectinids.
