Rogue Waves

Metocean group

This site is under construction, and will shortly provide a set of references on "Freak" or "Rogue" waves.

On New year's day 1995, this wave rose up to 18.5 metres along the Draupner platform operated by Statoil, whereas significant wave height was only close to 12 metres as it shows on the right part of the figure. One can see above the wave profiles for the 30 seconds (from blue to red) before the wave reached the platform. It is noteworthy that a very deep trough can be observed (yellow curves) about 10 seconds before the maximum crest, 50 metres ahead, and that it is returned to normal at the time of that crest.
