Graduated from Leningrad (St.-Petersburg) State University, Dep. of Geology (Marine Geology), 1974-1979.
Post-graduate student of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (Moscow), Marine Geology, 1982-1986. Ph.D., 1990 for a work on ocean metalliferous sediments of high-temperature sulfide-forming hydrothermal fields.
Dr. Sci., 2004 for a work on the hydrothermal mineralization at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Lithologist of Stratigraphy Department of the Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ocean (VNIIOkeangeologia, Leningrad - St.-Petersburg). Participating in geological surveys on the Arctic Islands, 1977-81.

Jr.Scientist, Scientist, Senior Scientist, Head of subdivision for Geology of Massive Sulfides and Metalliferous Sediments, Deputy Director of the same Institute, 1982, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1996.

Chief scientist of ocean-going expeditions in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, 1983, 1985, 1990, 1991, 1993.
Co-chief scientist of international (Russian-American-Norwegian-Japanese) expeditional Projects of investigation of gas and hydrothermal vents and seafloor hydrates in the Norwegian/Greenland Sea (1996, 1998, 2000).
Participant of several diving programs in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans operated by the Academy of Sciences (1986, 1988, 1998). Participated in the cruise of R/V Maria S. Merian (Germany, 2006) to the Logatchev hydrothermal field (drilling project).
